Lab Facilities

Lab FacilitiesAn effective and modern hatchery management is adopted in Geekay hatcheries for the culture of seeds of Litopaneaus vannamei. The mother prawns are flown from Florida and the prawns are hatched in Thupilipalam hatchery in Gudur District of Andhra Pradesh. Geekay hatcheries are experts in managing time as the live animal's transit time is so short, it should be made available in labs within the stipulated time for breeding. Geekay Hatcheries provides practical and effective technical guidance for shrimp hatchery management,  The basic requirements for an effective hatchery production system is adopted  which includes  the presence of essential infrastructure, the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (including Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) analysis), the maintenance of bio security, the provision of adequate amounts of clean water, the responsible use of chemicals, and the assurance of health status of stocks through laboratory testing. Geekay hatcheries comply with all these systems and it is these systems make the hatchery one of the leading one in India

Ours is a A well-designed shrimp hatchery  consist of separate facilities for quarantine, acclimatization, maturation, spawning and hatching, larval and nursery rearing, indoor and outdoor algal culture, and for the hatching  of Artemia. Additionally, there are supporting infrastructure for the handling of water (facilities for abstraction, storage, filtration, aeration, heating and distribution), and feed (laboratories for analysis and preparation and storage facilities), as well as maintenance areas, packing areas for nauplii and PL, offices, storerooms and staff living quarters.

The physical separation or isolation of the different production facilities is a feature of Geekay hatchery. We have incorporated into the construction of new hatcheries in addition to excising one. The hatchery facility have a wall and fence around the periphery of the property, with enough height to stop the entrance of animals and unauthorized persons. This will help to reduce the risk of pathogen introduction as well as increase overall security.

The quarantine of all new animals to be introduced into the hatchery is through strict bio security measures. Before passing to the production system, the brood stock is screened for subclinical levels of pathogens.

Water for the hatchery is filtered and treated to prevent entry of vectors and any pathogens that may be present in the source water. This is achieved by our hatchery by initial filtering through sub sand well points, sand filters, mesh bag filters into the first reservoir and settling tank. Following primary disinfection by chlorination, and after settlement, the water is further filtered again with a finer filter and then disinfected using ultraviolet light (UV) and/or ozone. The use of activated carbon filters, the addition of ethylene demines tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and temperature and salinity regulations are maintained in the water supply system. The UV treatment and Ozone instruments are sophisticated one with micro level control parameters.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlining the control protocol for Geekay hatchery is described  in a   comprehensive document that covers each stage or process of the production cycle. The document includes details of all of the critical control points (CCP) and describes how to perform each task to control the associated risk; a copy is available for all workers. Meetings are held on regular intervals to introduce the protocol and explain. The need for, and contents of the SOPs. This system gives good opportunity to clearly identify and explain all points that generate doubts or that may be misinterpreted and to get practical input from the hatchery staff. Mr. G.K Reddy spends most of his working time in the hatchery to look after the quality measures and production of healthy seed.

The brood stock goes through stage 1,2,3, and 4 before it is sold to farmers. The seeds are packed in PP bags with enough oxygen before it is send to various destinations of India.
